Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
